Totally unrelated to smallpox, but still really really cool-
200 new species of frogs were discovered in Madagascar, doubling the currently known number. However, preservation and conservation is hard to accomplish on the world's fourth largest island- with such a rich diversity of species and rare creatures, it should, in my opinion, become a higher priority for Madagascar governments, naturalists, and global citizens.
